Basic steps for safe and trusted accommodation rentals:

  • Always check out the agency or owner of the property.
  • Search online to see if there have been any negative reports (try adding the word ‘complaints’ or ‘scam’ after the name of the agent/owner).
  • Check if they have any credentials or accreditation – and make sure that they are legitimate by contacting or visiting the official websites of the accreditation organisation.
  • Ask to see the rental terms & conditions and check them thoroughly.
  • Ensure that you have contact numbers for the agency/owner and ensure that they are working.
  • Where possible, use a resource such as Google Street View to see the property and its immediate surroundings.
  • For longer lets, always try to view the property or have someone you trust view it.
  • Check all the above before paying a deposit
  • Note – It is inadvisable to use untraceable payment methods such as Wire Transfers – be particularly wary if you are asked to do so.
